MY NATURALIST'S ALMANAC

I started my Naturalist's Almanac in 2000, the year I bought my first computer. I had retired from a lifetime of teaching and writing and wanted a retirement project that would keep me intellectually engaged in what had become my primary interest: natural history. I wanted to keep learning and sharing what I was learning about what I've come to think of as the history of natural history, so I set myself to researching and writing about a bit of natural history for every day of the year.

My project began as a Web site called Naturalist's Almanac and Book of Days , but sometime in 2005 I decided I could work more efficiently if I created an illustrated blog with annotated links at the end of each post. My intention was always to give my information away as a free gift to those who share my interests, and the Blogopsphere seemed like a perfect place to do just that.

I began developing this Naturalist's Almanac with Blogger and was reasonably happy with how it was evolving until I discovered WordPress and, at about the same time, Blogger converted to the new Google way of doing things. The changes made me nervous, so I decided to develop a second version of my almanac with Word Press.

I still prefer the way my Blogger pages print, so if you want to print an entry to use as a resource, use the Blogger version. But if you want to read my entries in calendar order, starting with January 1 and ending with December 31, use the Word Press version.

I created this "About My Naturalist's Almanac" blog to provide background information on my project and also to have a place to blog my progress.
